Celebrating the great Malcom X

Malcolm X: The Uncompromising Voice of Black Liberation

Malcolm X (1925–1965) was a revolutionary African American leader, minister, and activist who played a crucial role in the Civil Rights Movement. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he championed a radical and uncompromising approach to racial justice, emphasizing Black empowerment, self-defense, and independence from oppressive systems. His work laid the foundation for the Black Power movement, inspiring generations to fight against racial injustice with strength and self-determination.

Short Biography

Born Malcolm Little on May 19, 1925, in Omaha, Nebraska, his father, a preacher and follower of Marcus Garvey, was killed under suspicious circumstances by white supremacists. His family struggled under systemic racism, leading Malcolm into a life of crime as a young man.

While in prison, he educated himself, converted to Islam, and joined the Nation of Islam (NOI) under the guidance of Elijah Muhammad. By the late 1950s, he became the movement’s most electrifying speaker, advocating for Black nationalism and self-defense.

In 1964, he left the NOI due to ideological conflicts and founded the OAAU, evolving into a more global, human rights-oriented leader. On February 21, 1965, Malcolm X was assassinated while giving a speech in Harlem, likely due to tensions between him and the NOI leadership.
